Chinese Calendar Baby Gender 2026: How to Read the Chart

How to work out your lunar age and lunar month of conception for 2026, with the official lunar month dates, and what a 2.8-million-birth study found about accuracy.

To read the Chinese gender chart for 2026, you need two numbers: your lunar age at conception and the lunar month you conceived in. Find your age on the side of the chart and the month across the top, and the square where they meet says “boy” or “girl”. It’s a fun tradition, but a study of more than 2.8 million births found the chart is right about as often as a coin toss, so enjoy it and don’t paint the nursery by it.

How the chart works

The Chinese gender chart (also called the Chinese calendar or Chinese gender predictor) is a grid:

  • Rows: the mother’s lunar age at conception, usually from 18 to 45.
  • Columns: the lunar month of conception, 1 to 12.
  • Each square: a boy or a girl.

The catch is that both numbers use the Chinese lunar calendar, not your regular calendar. Most mistakes come from using your ordinary age and the ordinary month. The next two sections walk through both conversions for 2026.

Step 1: Work out your lunar age

The chart uses the traditional way of counting age, where a baby is one year old at birth and everyone gains a year at Lunar New Year, not on their birthday. In practice:

Lunar age at conception = (lunar year of conception − lunar year of your birth) + 1

The “lunar year” of a date is the year whose Lunar New Year has already passed. If a date falls before that year’s Lunar New Year, it belongs to the previous lunar year.

Lunar New Year dates you’ll need, from the Hong Kong Observatory’s conversion tables:

Lunar year Starts on
2025 January 29, 2025
2026 February 17, 2026
2027 February 6, 2027

Look up the Lunar New Year of your own birth year in the same tables.

Worked examples (the 1996 Lunar New Year fell on February 19, 1996):

Mother born Conceived Lunar years Lunar age Regular age
March 10, 1996 April 1, 2026 1996 → 2026 31 30
February 1, 1996 April 1, 2026 1995 → 2026 32 30
March 10, 1996 February 10, 2026 1996 → 2025 30 29

So your lunar age is usually one, and sometimes two, years more than your regular age.

Step 2: Find your lunar month of conception

Lunar months start at each new moon and last 29 or 30 days. Here are the 2026 month start dates from the Hong Kong Observatory’s 2026 table:

Lunar month Starts on
1st February 17, 2026
2nd March 19, 2026
3rd April 17, 2026
4th May 17, 2026
5th June 15, 2026
6th July 14, 2026
7th August 13, 2026
8th September 11, 2026
9th October 10, 2026
10th November 9, 2026
11th December 9, 2026

Dates from January 19 to February 16, 2026 fall in the 12th month of the 2025 lunar year.

If you don’t know your conception date, estimate it. ACOG explains that pregnancy is counted as starting two weeks after the first day of your last menstrual period, so conception is roughly your LMP plus 14 days. That’s an estimate: ovulation varies, and a few days can move you into a neighboring month.

Leap months. Some lunar years repeat a month. 2025 had two 6th months (June 25 and July 25, 2025). The chart has only 12 columns, so a leap month has no column of its own and every calculator has to pick one, which is one more reason the answer can flip.

Step 3: Read the square, and know what it’s worth

With your lunar age and month, find the square. That part takes seconds. The bigger question is whether it means anything.

In 2010, researchers tested the chart against 2,840,755 singleton births in Sweden from 1973 to 2006, converting each mother’s age and conception month to lunar dates. The agreement between the chart and the real sex of the baby was effectively zero (kappa 0.0002). Accuracy didn’t change with the mother’s age, education, weight or number of previous children, and using a website’s version of the method on a subset of 1,000 births didn’t help either. The authors concluded the method “is no better at predicting the sex of a baby than tossing a coin” (Villamor et al., Paediatric and Perinatal Epidemiology, 2010).

That’s why claims of 90-plus percent accuracy don’t hold up. Any method that guesses boy or girl will be right about half the time by chance, and people remember the hits.

If you enjoy a playful guess

Guessing is half the fun of pregnancy, and there’s nothing wrong with that as long as everyone knows it’s a game. If you like the ritual, SeeMyBaby’s gender reveal party turns the guess into a little show on your iPhone: pull the ribbon on a gift box, hear a drumroll and watch pink or blue balloons. Like the chart, it’s a playful AI guess, just for fun, not a medical result. Parents who already know the sex tell the app and skip the guess.

How to actually find out

If you want a real answer, the medical routes are a cell-free DNA blood test from about 10 weeks, CVS or amniocentesis when they’re done for medical reasons, and the anatomy scan at about 18 to 22 weeks. Our guide on when you can find out the gender lays out each one, and is any baby gender predictor 100 percent accurate? rates the at-home kits. More guides are on the SeeMyBaby blog.

Questions parents ask

Is the Chinese gender chart accurate?

No. A study of more than 2.8 million Swedish births found it was no better than tossing a coin.

How do I calculate my lunar age for the Chinese gender chart?

Subtract the lunar year you were born in from the lunar year you conceived in, then add one. If your birthday or conception date falls before Lunar New Year, use the previous lunar year.

What is the lunar month if I conceived in March 2026?

March 1 to 18, 2026 falls in the 1st lunar month, and March 19 to 31 in the 2nd, according to the Hong Kong Observatory’s 2026 table.

Should I use my due date to find the conception month?

You can. Count back 38 weeks from your due date, or add about two weeks to the first day of your last period. Both are estimates, so a date near the start of a lunar month can fall either side.
